We do like the effect that ferrous sulfate gives with our tannin-rich leaves: gray and black leaves, often very distinguished with visible veins, but we do not always like the murky background. The alternative to only use an alum-based mordant would only give us yellows and greens. and lack the definition that ferrous sulfate gives us.
